Supervisor Dan Silva’s Meltdown
I am going to scoop the Appeal-Democrat on this one. Sutter County Supervisor Dan Silva must to resign. TODAY, Mr. Supervisor!!
“A county supervisor on Tuesday night compared the Sutter County Taxpayers Association to the Ku Klux Klan.” (Appeal-Democrat, Taxpayer group likened to KKK, 10/12/05) Assuming that the report is accurate, this is not a minor gaff!
Apparently the Sutter County Taxpayers Association (SCTA) has struck a nerve. SCTA wanted to discuss the cost of health insurance for retirees. This is a cost that represents an unstated and unfunded liability for the County (previous discussion on this issue). This is an issue that was ignored by Management in the FY 2003-04 County audit.
The SCTA simply requested that the Board of Supervisors inform the public of the cost of the unfunded liability for post-employment medical costs. This is the cost of retiree health insurance from age 55 to age 65. These benefits were negotiated, approved by the Board of Supervisors, and owed to the retirees.
SCTA asked what additional liabilities would be incurred if those employees who have not already negotiated for post-employment medical were to be covered.
These were simple questions. Based upon Supervisor Silva’s response the questions may have uncovered his TRUE feelings toward the voters of Sutter County.
Supervisor Silva apparently had nothing of substance to say so he decided to attack a citizens group that was asking these important financial questions. One could conclude that SCTA struck too close to home for Supervisor Silva. To liken SCTA to the KKK simply because Supervisor Nelson and his wife were removed from the organization is simply ridiculous and child like. There are Democrats, Republicans and Independents that support the activities of SCTA, there simply aren't members of the Board of Superviors because they don't believe in SCTA and its goals.
Supervisor Silva has proven that he does not have the temperament to be an elected official. If this was a spur of the moment comment the public must question the Supervisor’s thoughts about minorities and others that may disagree with his positions. If this was a well thought out comment the public must assume that the Supervisor has no leadership qualities.
I must remind the Supervisor that the Sutter County Grand Jury said “In view of the position that they hold, the Board of Supervisors should be able to handle criticism in a more tactful manner.” There is no doubt that Supervisor Silva has ratcheted up the rhetoric to the point of being over-the-top.
Supervisor Silva can’t be demoted to a “lesser Supervisor” position similar to Senator Trent Lott’s removal from the Republican leadership in the Senate. Silva simply must be removed. If the other members of the Board did not immediately censure the comment then they are equally complicit in the comment.
Supervisor Silva you have only one action left in your political career – RESIGN!!
