Say No To Single Payer/Universal Health Care – Another Reason
Single Payer and Universal health care is a simple concept. It is being sold as a way to “control costs†thus making health care affordable to everyone.
The Washington Times has this eye-opening editorial – The real cancer threat
However, a combination of earlier detection, new medicines and speedier drug approvals has increased life expectancy and reduced death rates.
Unfortunately, progress is in danger of eroding. The rate of cancer drug approvals is still low. Researchers know that most cancer drugs work for a small group of patients based on genetic profiles. Yet the FDA increasingly demands that cancer trials be designed to include responders and non-responders so that studies are virtually guaranteed to demonstrate marginal benefits. Meanwhile, Rep. Henry Waxman is readying legislation that would require such clinical trials for approval and post-market followup even as he pushes for weaker safety standards for generic versions of biotech products. This will result in many cancer drugs that could otherwise save the lives of many being scrapped at the expense of patients with incurable illnesses.
I can understand people not wanting an insurance company to make health care decisions for them but do you really want Rep. Waxman making those decisions?
Require skewed test results and you get fewer and fewer important drug discoveries. People die and costs go down.
Worse, many in Congress want to impose a cost-effectiveness standard on access to cancer drugs similar to one used in Great Britain and Canada as a way to drive down drug prices.
There it is. Costs are controlled not by reducing or eliminating profit but by imposing “cost-effectiveness†standards devised by politicians. Need an operation, ask a politician for approval.
So much for a government that supports the idea of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. You will be depressed with Single Payer or Universal health care. Your liberty to get the best care available will rest with the government and not you and your doctor. Lastly, if it costs too much to treat you for your illness you can simply check out. This will also reduce Medicare funding and Social Security payments.
Clinton Care II is on its way.
